How I found the true meaning of Salvation

Hello,

My name is Aletta, and I want to share with you my testimony of how I found the true meaning of Salvation.

I live in South Africa, and was brought up in a Christian home with parents who were both members of the Dutch Reformed Church (die Nederduits Gereformeerde Kerk, as it is known in Afrikaans). As children, we went to church and Sunday school every Sunday. Later, as an adult, I became a member too and kept up the "tradition".

I always believed in God, and prayed daily and read my Bible. There came a time however, when I started to have doubts whether or not I will go to heaven when I die.

In PSALMS 27:4 I read "One thing have I desired of the Lord , that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord , and to enquire in his temple".  I tried to find concrete answers from the church I was attending, but I did not get any answers or support in my quest.  I then started to read the Bible more intensively and prayed to God to show me the truth about my own soul and whether I am "saved" or not.

God lead me to JOHN 3:5 where Jesus stated: "Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God".

I did not quite understand this scripture, or exactly what it implied. My church back then believed that if one believes in God and Jesus Christ, you are automatically a Christian and, that upon believing, the Holy Spirit then lives in you. This "theory" however, did not give me any peace and I couldn't find any further answers.

In the meantime, my youngest daughter Sunette decided to go to England after her studies. She was also struggling in her faith and she wanted to know whether God really existed . During this time she befriended a couple belonging to this Church, Christian Assemblies International (CAI).

They never "preached" to her about God, but she knew they were Christians. During a weekend trip together to Scotland, my daughter unintentionally ended up attending a Christian meeting in this church. During this meeting, she had a powerful experience with God and received the Holy Spirit, with the sign of speaking in tongues, and was afterwards baptised.

Late that night she phoned me from England and told me the whole story.  Inwardly, I knew I wanted to have the same salvation.

When the time of her visa was over, she came back home. My daughter then showed me many scriptures about what it means to be a Christian and the steps of salvation as it is described in the Bible. I then knew I wasn't "saved" according to the Bible, and believing alone was just not enough. JAMES 2:19 "Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble."

During my daughter's overseas stay, she also met a very nice Christian man in Scotland and was to be married soon. Due to various reasons they had to get married in South Africa. Since a lot of things had to be organised, there wasn't much time to pursue my desire to be baptised and spirit-filled, but I prayed that I would have a chance when my “son-in-law-to-be” came to South Africa.

My son-in-law, Chris, could only come to South Africa for two weeks.  So after their civil wedding they went for a quick trip to see a bit of our beautiful country and to visit some friends. At first it was planned that afterwards Chris would  go directly to Cape Town to catch his flight back to Europe. This would have meant I wouldn't see Chris until a couple of months later when I planned to visit Scotland.

In the meantime I was praying to get saved. MARK 11:24; "Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them."

The day before Chris' departure, they decided to come and visit me again instead. That evening we talked a lot and went through salvation scriptures. I knew I wanted to be saved and receive the Holy Spirit according to the Bible's instructions.

ACTS 2:38: "Then Peter said unto them, Repent and be baptised every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."

We prayed together and after my repentance, I started to speak in tongues as I was filled with the Holy Spirit! ACTS 19:6; "And when Paul had laid his hands upon them , the Holy Ghost come on them; and they spake with tongues , and prophesied"

Since we didn't have a pool, the next best option had to suffice - so I was baptised in my bathtub! What an exciting and liberating evening!  It is so wonderful to have that promise that I am His child.

JOHN 20:31; " But these are written that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ , the Son of God;  and that believing ye might have life through his name"

PHILIPPIANS 3:20; "For our conversation is in heaven ; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: "

It is great to be part of this assembly now, to have brothers and sisters all over the world, and to get all the teaching and support to stay strong in the Lord.

Praise the Lord!

Many greetings,

Aletta
