Healed from Eating Disorder
Hi to all of you around the world.
My name is Anja and I would like to share with you a healing testimony that happened quite some time ago in 2002/03. I was living in Germany at that time and was just about to move to Scotland.
Working as a medical assistant for a GP over a period of 8 years, I got to know many of our patients very well. Among them were twin sisters who were just approaching their teenager years. Both told me that they didn’t want me to leave.
Unfortunately one of them developed an eating disorder and it got worse towards the end of the year. The arrangement for hospital treatments had been made to start after the holiday period in the new year. Sadly her conditions worsened right before Christmas and she became a danger to herself and others. She was admitted to hospital immediately.
It was just two days to Christmas Eve and I was busily trying to get a flight to see my family over the holiday period to break the news of my upcoming move. I had planned to leave on the 24th December and on the internet I could see that there was a flight available. I tried to book it but it didn’t work. I even asked my neighbours for help but without any success. Talking to my Dad he offered to arrange the flight for me. The next day he phoned and said he had enough of trying in vain to get that flight and he booked another one for the 25th instead.
That night I went onto my knees and prayed for the girl. I was quite burdened with her being so ill and pleaded with the Lord to heal her. I had to think of a
..it hadn’t ever happened to me before.
friend who had died of cancer just a year of two earlier where I felt God’s presence and knew I should lay hands on him and pray for him but I didn’t. This weighed heavily on me now, and I asked the Lord for a confirmation that he would help. Suddenly a scripture came into my mind. Not the words of the scripture itself, just book, chapter and verse. This was special for me as it hadn’t happened to me before. I opened my Bible in PSALMS 107:18-21, where it says:
“Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; and they draw near unto the gates of death. Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distress. He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions. Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!”
This scripture struck me deeply as it described the whole situation exactly. She abhorred all manner of food. Her body was fading away before our very eyes. She was literally drawing close to death. I decided to go and see her in hospital even though it was Christmas Eve, and I could be sure her parents would be spending this day with her as it is the main Christmas holiday in Germany.
I made my way to Munich in the late afternoon on 24th December. On arrival I met the twin’s parents and we chatted a bit before they left to celebrate Christmas with the rest of the family at home. Knowing me for so many years they didn’t mind me staying on a bit longer. After they left we both started to talk and she told me over again that she didn’t want me to move away. I replied by assuring her, that she could always come to visit me, but that I would not be able to come and see her where she would be soon. She looked at me with sad eyes and said: “I don’t want to die!”
I asked the Lord to send his word, and now to heal the girl and deliver her from destruction!
I started to tell her about God and that He still heals today and asked her if I could pray for her. The suffering girl agreed and I prayed those very words of Psalm 107, telling the Lord that she was abhorring all manner of meat and drawing near unto the gates of death and that both of us, the lass and me, were crying out in this time of trouble and asking Him to save her out of her distress. I asked the Lord to send Jesus, his word, right here and now to heal the girl and deliver her from destruction. Then we thanked the Lord for his goodness.
When driving home later that evening I kept on praying and suddenly it hit me. If I would have got on that flight as planned I would have not been able to pray for the girl! It was of the Lord that no one had been able to arrange my flights! HE just didn’t allow it to happen!! I thanked and praised the Lord for this interference and happily took off to see my family the next day.
After returning from my vacation I grabbed the next opportunity to drive to Munich to visit our patient in hospital. I was so curious to see her. She had been moved to another ward, which could have been both because she deteriorated and needed special care or because she had got better. When I entered her room I was amazed about what I saw. Here she was, happily munching away on jelly bears looking soooo much healthier than just a few days before. I was told that her hospital stay, which had been scheduled up to Easter, had been reduced for only 6 or so more weeks to observe her progress. The doctors were stunned about her progress and said it is a miracle that she put on so much weight as for doing so she must eat at least 3500calories a day!
Praise the Lord! The word given had been fulfilled!
Since then I found another promise in the Bible for people with eating disorders. It is in Job 33:20-30. As it was in the case of the twin, it says in these verses
...which is through the death of Jesus Christ and his resurrection into life.
that a messenger, an interpreter is needed to show the suffering soul the ‘way out’, which is through the death of Jesus Christ and his resurrection into life. He paid the price. He is the ransom given for us.
“So that his life abhorreth bread, and his soul dainty meat. His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; and his bones that were not seen stick out. Yea, his soul draweth near unto the grave, and his life to the destroyers. If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand to shew unto man his uprightness: Then he is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom. His flesh shall be fresher than a child’s: he shall return to the days of his youth: He shall pray unto God and he will be favourable unto him: and he shall see his face with joy: for he will render unto man his righteousness. He looketh upon men, and if any say, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not; He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light. Lo, all these things worketh God oftentimes with man, to bring back his soul from the pit, to be enlightened with the light of the living.”
I hope this will help many of you who are suffering from Anorexia or Bulimia or any other kind of eating disorders. There is help! There is a way out! Don’t give up but turn to the LORD for help.
God bless you.
