The World God Created
A warm breeze gently moves the tops of the giant fern trees a hundred feet above your head. But there is more to hear than the caress of the soft, warm hand of the wind, massaging the earth. The almost relaxing drone of a dragonfly captures your attention. Turning, you see the brightly coloured insect, nearly as long as you are tall. The sound of play-like splashing pulls you around a grove of richly-fruited trees to behold three sauropods frolicking in the nearby river. Overhead a pterosaur wheels around in ever tighter circles, followed by two of her youngsters. As you are distracted by these wonders, you don't even notice the lion until he brushes your leg with his tail, looking for a greeting.
The world God originally designed and created for man was vastly different from the world we know today. The impressive beauty that remains after 6,000 years of the ravages of sin on Earth, only weakly reflects the shadows of the beauty with which God originally endowed a rich creation. Many evolutionary reconstructions of the past, though confused on time frame, make a start at communicating some of the wonders of the world God originally created. Unfortunately, these depictions lead many to believe that such exotic scenes and wondrous creatures must have existed millions or even billions of years ago.
When did God do this?
How old do you suppose the Earth looked only one year after creation? Evolutionary geologists tell us that it takes hundreds of thousands of years to wear down new rock into sand and soil, and for the sea to cut a beach. As a result, one would not expect to see beaches or soil on an Earth that was only five years old. Or would we?
Off the coast of Iceland, over three hundred feet below the surface of the ocean, hot volcanic rock began to seep into the cold ocean water in 1963. By 1967, over half a cubic mile of new, hot rock had formed a brand new island where there was once only ocean. This new island was named Surtsey. The following summer, scientists arrived on the island to study it. They found that a basalt cliff on the beach had been eroded over 300 feet inland by the sea in less than five years. Several parts of the island already had terraced beaches up to 300 feet wide. On the north side of the island, newly formed sand had formed a sand bar which extended almost a thousand feet out from the original island.
What if geologists had not known Surtsey's history? They would have guessed that the island was thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of years old.
The key is understanding that God created a fully-functional creation, not a creation that looked deceptively old. Adam and Eve were ready for their first meal of ripe fruit by the time the sun lowered out of the sky, on day six of history. And they ate that juicy, ripe fruit from trees that had never flowered or set fruit. Rather than a deceptive creation, it was simply created already functioning as designed.
The same goes for star light. A careful reading of GENESIS 1:17-18 shows that the stars were created for the purpose of giving light on the Earth, no matter how far away they are. As a result of this God-given purpose, even the light from stars that are hundreds or thousands of light years away began to cascade onto the Earth as they were created.
Some evolutionists argue that since star light contains information about the star it comes from, the light from stars more than 6,000 light years from Earth contains false information about processes that never took place. In other words, the young Earth perspective makes God appear to be a deceiver about past events taking place on these stars. (One seriously doubts that evolutionists are actually concerned about protecting God's honesty.)
Did God create the light en route from the stars so that Adam and Eve could see them on their first night on Earth? We don't know. However, this possibility would satisfy the scriptural requirement of a fully functional creation. Even if God did create the light en route, He would not have done it in a deceptive manner. Scripture clearly tells us that the stars, as well as everything else, were not created according to naturalistic means, but by supernatural means.
Another possibility which has been suggested is that the speed of light (as well as nuclear processes) was much faster in the early creation. It is possible that a star could generate its light and fill the entire universe with its signature in mere seconds after creation. As with any reconstruction of one-time past events, we will never be able to prove exactly what happened.
Most creationists believe that the pre-Flood Earth looked very different from today's Earth. Most creationists accept the fairly solid evidence that has been offered for continental drift. It seems very likely that before the Flood, all the Earth's major land masses were united in one super-continent. Some, such as Dr. Walter Brown, suggest that the geological activity associated with the Flood, split this land mass and began moving the continents to their present locations.
Others, such as Barry Setterfield and Henry Morris, suggest that there was a post-Flood cataclysm that resulted in splitting the super-continent. Some believe that this separation of the continents is referred to in GENESIS 10:25, which says that the Earth was divided in the days of Peleg.
Additionally, Setterfield points out that there is evidence that the tilt of the Earth's axis changed rapidly sometime after the Flood. George Dodwell, a former South Australian Government astronomer, theorised that an asteroid struck the Earth at the time of the Flood, or shortly after, changing the tilt of the Earth's axis. The Earth continued to wobble, ever more weakly, until it stabilised in the 1850's. This wobble would explain why Eudoxus' measurements in 350 B.C. place the north celestial pole where modern astronomers thought it should be in 1900 B.C. It would also explain why Stonehenge does not line up with the expected mid-summer solstice. However, if Eudoxus' measurements were correct, Stonehenge would have lined up with sunrise on the morning of the mid-summer solstice! Dodwell went on to bolster his theory with measurements of the position of the sun recorded at the Temple of Amen-Ra at Karnac. Later authors also correlated Dodwell's calculations with the sun's position, recorded at the temples of Tia Huanaco in South America.
If Dodwell's figures are essentially correct, the tilt of the Earth's axis would have been less than it is today. This would have left the Earth with much smaller temperature extremes between the poles and the equator than we experience today. Geology strongly suggests that this was indeed the case.
Whether the break-up of the super-continent was caused by the Flood, an asteroid impact, or something else, there is a more important question. Could the Earth's continental plates move rapidly enough to move as far as they have in only about 4,500 years? There is good evidence to suggest that they could. From 500 A.D. until their invasion by the Incas in 1476, a large and powerful civilisation lived in what is now northern Peru. Between 500 and 1200 A.D. they built the largest network of irrigation canals ever constructed in South America. This canal system was built using engineering methods that are considered impressive even by modern standards. The remains of the canal system can still be seen today. However, because of geological changes, the canals no longer work.
Geologists studying the canal system discovered that portions of the South American continent shifted so rapidly that the Indians had to redesign their canal system continually to keep water in it. The plates on which South America rests, deep within the Earth, changed the slope of the ground so rapidly that the Indians could not keep up with the changing geology. Clearly, the forces that shaped today's Earth did not need millions of years to do their job.
The Pre-Flood climate
Biblical statements have led many creationists to conclude that the pre-Flood Earth was encased in a canopy of water vapour. This canopy would have produced an increased air pressure on the surface of the Earth - about twice the air pressure we have today.
This canopy would have held the sun's heat in the atmosphere, resulting in a tropical-like climate over much of the Earth. If the pre-Flood Earth had a much smaller tilt on its axis than today, the seasons would not have been so pronounced. A tropical climate may have extended nearly to the poles. Evidences of a pre-Flood tropical climate have been found near both of Earth's poles, further supporting this picture.
Did it rain before the Flood? Scripture doesn't say. GENESIS 2:5-6 indicates that it had not rained on the Earth before plants had grown. Rather, a mist rose up and watered the ground. The reference to the fact that plants had not yet grown, just before the reference that it had not yet rained, could be understood to mean that once plants started growing, God sent rain. It is not significant that rain is not mentioned again until the Flood, for neither is the mist. Scripture does not allow us to offer a dogmatic answer to the question of whether it rained before the Flood.
Modern medical researchers are learning that the human body actually works much better under higher atmospheric pressure than we have today. Under high pressure conditions osteomyelitis is reversed or eradicated. Wounds heal more quickly, and some wounds that will not heal at all in today's normal atmospheric pressure, heal completely under higher atmospheric pressure. Often brain injuries, senility, and the effects of a stroke, are reversed with hyperbaric treatment. In general, the whole body works better in higher air pressure.
Could the body's positive response to higher barometric pressure be evidence that man was originally made to live in the pre-Flood Earth? When this creation ends and the New Creation begins, we will find out for sure.
What is certain is that the climatic conditions, apparently found on the pre-Flood Earth, would have been able to support a much higher concentration of lush plant and animal life. The pre-Flood world also had many more original kinds of creatures. However, it is likely that there were fewer varieties within the kinds before the Flood. For example, the vast varieties of dogs we have today have been developed since the Flood, from the basic dog kind.
Adam's Life Span
Adam lived to be 930 years old, according to GENESIS 5. This doesn't seem possible in the world we know. As a result many ask, "Could Adam really have lived that long?"
Most of the effects of ageing are due to genetic mistakes that have accumulated over generations. This is in addition to the limitations on age which God later imposed on human beings. The first generations of man, so close to Adam and Eve, would have accumulated comparatively few genetic mistakes. In addition, if there was a vapour canopy above the Earth, life on Earth would have been protected from most, if not all, of the cosmic radiation that is a primary contributor to ageing.
Where was the Garden of Eden?
The location of the Garden of Eden has long fascinated people. For generations, sceptics have asked, "If Genesis is true, why can't we find the location of the original Garden of Eden?" The answer is, we can't find the Garden of Eden precisely because Genesis is true.
Sunday-school children stare at maps and carefully read GENESIS 2:8-14. Then they find the rivers listed in those verses on a map in an attempt to pin down Eden's location. However, there are other passages in the Bible that are more important in addressing Eden's location than those found in GENESIS 2. GENESIS 3:23-24 makes it very clear that God closed the Garden to man - meaning no one could ever go back.
In addition, GENESIS 7:11, tells us that at the beginning of the Flood,
"All the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened". This language about the breaking up of all the fountains of the deep strongly suggests violent and widespread volcanic action. The geological record witnesses that such violent action was indeed widespread across the face of the Earth. Very clearly the opening of the windows of heaven describes much more than simply heavy rain. In the Flood, the entire Earth's surface underwent violent reshaping.
Yes, you can find rivers on maps today with the same names as those mentioned in GENESIS 2:10-14. However, those rivers on our maps today are only named after their pre-Flood counterparts. God closed Eden to sinful man. A map cannot help us find Eden; the only way back to God is through Jesus Christ.
Where did Cain get his Wife?
Many people have a rather unfortunate and unscriptural view of family reunions at Adam and Eve's house. They picture Adam, Eve, their two sons, Cain and Seth, with a fifth place left empty in memory of Abel. This raises the obvious question, where did Cain get the wife mentioned in GENESIS 4:17? Some very silly answers have been offered. One of the silliest suggests that Cain "married" an ape. Their children were the ape-men that modern evolutionists say we evolved from.
Scripture clearly says that Adam and Eve had other sons and daughters (GENESIS 5:4). Cain obviously married one of his sisters. Today it is very unwise (and usually illegal) for siblings to marry. This is because mutations and other genetic changes are harmful, contrary to the wishful thinking of evolutionists. Since our genetic inheritance, perfect at Adam's creation, has been collecting mutations and other damage for 6,000 years, each of us is carrying a great deal of faulty genetic material around. However, this damage is most likely to result in some disability, or death, in offspring, only when both parents have the same genetic damage. Since siblings have a nearly identical genetic history, they are most likely to have the same genetic damage, and are least likely to have normal offspring.
However, Adam and Eve's children carried a minuscule amount of genetic damage (especially compared to modern human beings). Between the improbability of two of them having the same genetic damage and God's ever-present provision, siblings could then produce normal offspring.
