Constitutional Monarchy Must Be Preserved
We are pleased to present here the address given at Bankstown on 11th March, 1995, by Alderman John B. Smith, Mayor of Coffs Harbour, New South Wales. In the light of the universal attack on the creative norms which are at the centre of the culture of the world's Britannic peoples, whose origins and roots lie deep in the history of the 'People of the Book', it is a delight to have one in public office uphold these same precepts.
There is much unrest among Australians today. People feel instinctively that something is wrong, but cannot identify just what it is. Let me tell you what I believe to be true: Australia is at war.
Nonsense, you say! Let me say it again: Australia is at war. Certainly there have not yet been any bombs dropped or bullets fired, but whilst we should be grateful for that, the war that we are engaged in is a dirtier more soul-destroying conflict than the old-fashioned style where soldiers and civilians alike were killed and maimed and cities destroyed.
Let me direct your thoughts for a moment to a situation where a nation has been conquered. What are the actions of the conqueror?
- The Nation's Flag is taken down. Why should that be? It is a symbolic action that tells you that you are now under a different authority. A national flag is the rallying point when a call is made to the people. It tells where we belong and where we came from; what our culture is and what our fathers gave us. It is central to our national pride, and it is foreign to the conqueror.
- The Head of State is removed. The authority of the head of state and the loyalty they usually have from the people cannot be tolerated by the conqueror, therefore their power and popularity have to be destroyed; usually by imprisonment or death.
- The Media is controlled. It is essential that the media cannot speak out against the conqueror.
- The Constitution and Culture are ignored. To impose laws and control, very different from current measures, the nation's constitution will be ignored and the culture and form of government changed.
- The Race is diluted. Races have their own particular characteristics. If these trouble the conqueror other races will be induced to settle: history shows the introduction of other races, and the intermarriage that often follows will alter the national character.
- The Education System is changed. Standards have to be reduced to impose the conqueror's philosophies and to change the national history.
- The National Religion is changed. Acceptance of new philosophies and laws make it necessary.
- Personal Ownership is removed. What the State needs belongs to the State, without compensation.
- The Population is disarmed. This is done to make very sure that armed resistance to the new regime cannot take place.
All these actions are evident in Australia today. It is, therefore, not unreasonable to declare that we are at war. We are also in desperate need of parliamentarians who are God-fearing, loyal to our Queen, to the people of Australia and loyal to our heritage; wise practical, compassionate and, above all, people who will stand for our Constitution and serve the people, not rule them. Without such people in public office, there is little hope of our children ever enjoying the freedom, security and wealth that we older folk inherited from our forebearers.
Our Parliamentarians Help Alien Forces Destroy our Heritage
Because many of our parliamentarians do not realise we are at war, and they are not passionate about our Constitution and heritage, Australia is being defeated from within by Australians against Australians. And what is very sad and appalling about this is that they do not realise they are not only destroying you and me, but themselves also.
By unconstitutional legislation and by allowing UN Charters, declarations and like measures to become operative in Australia, they are slowly and surely stealing our land, our possessions, our freedom of speech, and our justice and mercy from our courts. They bankrupt many small businesses and farmers, break up families and create despair among our young people to the point of suicide.
They put the nation and its people - you and me and our children - into financial bondage from which few will escape and which could easily become physical bondage. Unless this push under the banner of republicanism is stopped the ultimate end will be civil war, as history shows.
None of us want that to happen. Therefore, in order to understand what is really going on, let us first look briefly at our present system of government.
We live in a Christian Constitutional Monarchy; a form of government that has developed over a period of more than two thousand years. It has had its ups and downs, but has stood the test of time and given its citizens benefits not had under any other form of government. Let me give you a few basic facts.
Biblical Authority is the Authority of Almighty God
Authority is the right to enforce obedience; to command, to decide, to rule or judge. The words "author" and "authority" are from the same root. Therefore, when the Bible gives authority to fathers, husbands, pastors and kings, that authority comes from Almighty God. Moreover, it is an authority that is both delegated and limited by Him as He wishes, and the only person to whom God has given absolute authority is Jesus Christ.
This may well seem like a sermon, but it is necessary to know these things in order to understand our Christian culture and heritage. And while it is not suggested that all who live in our society must be Christian - Section 116 of our Constitution guarantees religious freedom - all, whether Christian or non-Christian, enjoy the benefits and blessings of living in a Christian monarchy.
Only a handful of nations have enjoyed the individual liberty, justice and prosperity that we have enjoyed in the past. These benefits flow from yielding absolute authority to Jesus Christ and basing our government upon His Word. A monarch is central to a biblical Christian government.
Looking to the past we find that in A.D. 156, King Lucius made Christianity the national religion in England. He understood that the Kingdom of God requires that sovereignty be yielded to Jesus by all; by individuals, families, churches and nations.
In the 6th century, King Ethelbert passed the first law by an absolute ruler limiting his own powers. Later, King Alfred the Great declared: "The law of England is the law of God as written in the Bible and both the king and courts are subject to it and cannot change it." This resulted in a biblical system of government. People could walk the length and breadth of England without fear of being harmed, and the biblical heritage is the taproot of our freedoms. Unfortunately it is being poisoned by satanic laws and regulations finding their way into our law from the United Nations Organisation.
The Public Acknowledgement of the Absolute Authority of Jesus
In the 9th century there emerged an ancient service of praise and worship for installing monarchs. We call it the coronation service and it has hardly changed to this day. Before the heir to the Throne can be crowned, he or she must publicly acknowledge the overruling and absolute authority of Jesus Christ. Ever since then the central political struggle in our system has been to usurp that absolute sovereignty and authority, even to this day in Australia.
In the 17th century, England's chief justice insisted that neither king nor parliament was supreme and that any law contrary to the law of God was wrong and God's Law must prevail.
Therefore, the key question affecting individual freedom in every nation is: who has absolute sovereignty? If the answer is Jesus Christ only, then the dignity and the freedom of individuals is guaranteed.
In Australia today (1995), the play for absolute sovereignty is through republicanism, which is unbiblical. In a republic the people select the leader and decide the laws on the false notion that the will of the people determines what is right, whereas the Bible gives us God's Laws and tells us they are perfect. It is as dangerous for the will of the people to be absolute sovereign as it is for some tyrannical king or autocrat to hold absolute power.
On the other hand, our monarchy has moved in the opposite direction. The personal power of the monarch has been regulated and distributed. Only a few crucial reserve powers can be exercised by our monarch personally; the whole emphasis is away from monarchical power towards Christ's kingly virtues of servanthood and exemplary conduct.
Every social order rests on a creed, on a concept of life and law. Wherever there is an attack on the organisation of society, there is an attack on its religion. You will know that this is exactly what is happening in Australia. The citizens in Australia under the Crown need to realise that social order, security and freedom exist for us only while the creed upon which this great nation's foundation stones were set remains in place. Two of these stones are the Crown and the Constitution. Our Constitution begins:
"Whereas the people of New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Queensland and Tasmania humbly relying on the blessings of Almighty God have agreed to unite in one indissoluble Federal Commonwealth under the Crown of the United Kingdom of Great Britain..."
The Executive Power is Vested in Her Majesty
This ties us into the Christian Faith, and, further, in Section 1 it is stated: "The executive power of the Commonwealth shall be vested in the Federal Parliament which shall consist of The Queen, a Senate and a House of Representatives." Also, in Section 61 we read:
"The Executive power of the Commonwealth is vested in the Queen," which means, of course, that the Queen is the Head of Australia and not the Prime Minister, who is obviously trying to remove the Queen from her constitutional position. Put bluntly, he is being disloyal to his boss and his actions and those of numerous other parliamentarians, could well be judged to be of seditious intent under section 24A of the Crimes Act.
Our politicians on taking office take this oath:
"I,...., do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Her Heirs and successors according to law, so help me God." And if it is an affirmation: "I,...., do solemnly and sincerely declare that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Her Heirs and successors according to law." In so doing they recognize the foundations of our society, Almighty God - because He is the God referred to in the Constitution - and the Crown.
Why then, have they removed reference to these in the Citizenship Oath and Affirmation? Christians will understand that the answer to that question is to be found in the Holy Bible:
"For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." (EPHESIANS 6:12)
We now take a moment to compare the old and new oaths. The old oath stated:
"I swear by Almighty God that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia, Her Heirs and successors according to law, and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Australia and fulfil my duty as an Australian citizen."
This very positive and meaningful Oath upholds the foundation of our heritage, society and culture. But the new Republican Oath states:
"From this time forward, under God, I pledge my loyalty to Australia and its people whose democratic beliefs I share, whose rights and liberties I respect, and whose laws I will uphold and obey."
This is a dangerous Oath, for its meaning can be different for different people. Previously the Oath was taken with the applicant's hand holding The Holy Bible - The Word of Almighty God. By omitting the word Almighty from the Oath it can, and is intended to, refer to any god. This is confirmed on page 16 of the Official Handbook of Australian Citizenship ceremonies. Therein it refers to holy books and states: "If there is any difficulty in obtaining holy books the appropriate religious organisation should be approached."
The Republican Oath Changes the Concept of Citizenship
From my earlier explanation you will realise how, by the omission of the word Almighty and any reference to the Queen, the Republican Oath totally changes the significance and meaning of the Citizenship Oath. I see this change as an act of treason. It is unconstitutional and therefore invalid, and those naturalized by the use of it do not become Australian citizens. If I had used it in a naturalization ceremony it would, for me, have been an act of treason. I therefore refused to do so and promptly had my authority withdrawn by Senator Bolkus (former Minister of Immigration in the Labour Party - now defeated).
Our politicians are being led by external forces, alien to our well-being, to hand over Australian sovereignty to a one-world organisation or government. While some realise this, most of them do not know what is happening and are in danger of complicity against their own people: aiding those who would remove what is for them the greatest obstacle to their scheme - our Queen.
For these alien forces to succeed, her power and authority must be destroyed, and their agents work hard, by lies, innuendo and deception to separate Her Majesty from your loyalty. Do not fall for that act of treason!
This is only a brief outline of the roots of our culture and of some of the treasonable action which has been perpetrated against Australians. Now let us look at the current push which, if successful, will almost certainly see the demise of the Australia for which hundreds of thousands of our valiant men and women have fought and died.
Regionalisation is the Government's catch word today. (This was before the recent elections which were won by the Liberal/Conservative Party after 18 yrs) On the surface it seems logical and worthy of support, but in reality it is intended to lead to a profound change in the whole structure of government in Australia. From life in our Constitutional Monarchy - the bastion of a free people - we will find ourselves existing in a centralised, regionalized and socialist administration, similar to that in Russia, China and other countries, where it has failed miserably and kept the people in poverty. It has been on the agenda for decades and became public in the time of the Whitlam government. Since then, various people and organisations have been working on the project until today it is being pushed on all fronts...
In conclusion, it must be said I am not the only one to agonize over the betrayal of his native land. I am reminded of Rudyard Kipling early this century; he summed it up far better than I ever could:
"The dark eleventh hour
Draws on and sees us sold
To every evil power
We fought against of old.
The blood our fathers spilt,
Our love, our toils, and pains
Are counted us for guilt,
And only bind our chains.
Before an Empires eyes
The traitor claims his price.
What need of further lies?
We.... are the sacrifice."
