Adam - Evolved or Created?

The Bible teaches that God made Adam out of the dust of the ground, but some people think that Adam was an ape-man that God breathed into so he became fully human. This article exposes the fossil record of the so-called ape-men and shows that God’s Word can be trusted!

Christian, what is your authority for believing that there is one true and living God and that He is Almighty, All-powerful and All-knowing? What is your authority for believing in the Son of God, the Lord Jesus Christ, and that He and He alone is the only way of salvation? What is your authority for believing the doctrines that you hold? The answer to these and similar questions is The Bible, for it is in this very special Book that we read all about God - Who He is and how we can have a very special relationship with Him.

Can the Bible be trusted? This is a question that is often asked. The Bible says of itself that all Scripture is given by inspiration of God (2 TIMOTHY 3:16). In other words, all Scripture is God-breathed. Not just some parts of it, but all of it! All Scripture has been given to us by an infallible God - it is His word. It is the only writing that God has ever given to us. It is therefore very precious. The expression, "The Word of God", is very familiar to us; for a moment think about what it really means.

Some would say that the argument that is used in the above paragraph is meaningless because what is being said is that the Bible is the word of God because the Bible claims to be the word of God. When I was an atheist, I was challenged to read and study the Bible to see if it could be trusted. I discovered that not only could it be trusted but that its Author could also be trusted. This is my personal testimony. My challenge to those who have doubts about the authority of the Bible is to read and study it for yourself.

Now, one area in which the Bible has repeatedly come under attack is its teachings in the early chapters of Genesis. Many Christians have tried to reconcile the theory of evolution with the Biblical account of the creation and the early history of the earth. Such reconciliations are difficult to maintain especially when the evolutionist changes his views, alters his story or amends his ideas - as he does from time to time. In order to continue to harmonise Genesis with evolution, the unchanging word of God has to be continually re-interpreted in the light of the changing views of the evolutionist.

It is not my intention in this short article to attack the idea of the evolution of life on earth and to show it to be no more than mountains of speculation without a molehill of fact. What I hope to achieve is to make you, the reader, think about what you believe and why. In particular, I want you to think about: who was Adam?

The Bible teaches that Adam was made by God out of the dust of the ground. Some have tried to make out that the term, "the dust of the ground", is the Bible's way of teaching evolution. In other words, the story of the creation of man is seen to be the teaching that man has evolved by the evolutionary process of unicellular organisms - multi-cellular organisms - invertebrates - fish - amphibians - reptiles - mammals - man.

Believing that life had its origin in some warm, muddy pool, such people see a definite relationship between evolution and the term "the dust of the ground". But "the dust of the ground" cannot possibly mean "evolution", for in GENESIS 3 we read that God told Adam that when he died he would return to dust because he had been made of dust. Are we to believe that the Bible teaches re-incarnation? God forbid!

Others maintain that Adam was an ape-man that God breathed into so that he became a Homo sapiens sapiens. Many are unaware that the anthropologist has found in the fossil record remains of apes and men, but they have not found ape-men! The famous Australopithecenes (which means ‘Southern Ape-men') are now recognised by evolutionists as having nothing to do with the evolution of the apes into men. Australopithecenes are now seen to be animals, as different from men as cats are from dogs. Furthermore, other "creatures" once thought of as ape-men, e.g. Neanderthal Man, are now recognised as belonging to the genus Homo, i.e. Man. Ape-men are still figments of the imagination - none have been found!

If we Christians believe in the evolution (rather than the creation) of Adam, then how did he become perfect? It is impossible! If Adam was the product of some evolutionary process, then he was never perfect and so he never fell. What then of salvation? The Bible clearly teaches that Jesus Christ died for our sins. What is "sin" in such an evolutionary setting?

Furthermore, death is an important factor in the theory of evolution. If Adam evolved then death would have been occurring for millions and millions of years. Yet the Bible teaches clearly that death came because of Adam's sin (ROMANS 5:12).

In Paul's epistles to the Romans and to the Corinthians, Adam and Jesus Christ are compared and contrasted. Jesus Christ is called the "last Adam" (1 CORINTHIANS 15:45). In Adam - the first Adam - we inherit sin and death. We cannot stop sinning; we cannot stop dying. Yet in Christ - the last Adam - we can have victory over sin and we can inherit everlasting abundant life.

"O grave, where is thy victory?"
