When I Received the Holy Spirit!
Hi, my name is Selina and I would like to let you know how I became a Christian when I was 18.
A guy gave me a Christian leaflet when I was 16 and I talked to him for a while. The conversation stuck in me as he mentioned that Jesus Christ would return. At the time I found this absolutely ridiculous and mocked him, I was with my sister and we were running late for the cinema. But through all the laughing I was really listening to him. He quoted scriptures I had never heard before and they seemed to make a lot of sense. It amazed me that it wasn't from a priest or a minister on a pulpit but from a normal everyday guy. Before we left, he smiled and said to me that he knows that I am listening to him and to continue praying. I asked my sister later, how he knew that I was actually listening and how he knew that I was praying.
Since that day I started to talk to God more. At times I would be very bitter and shout to God and ask why things were so bad. But I knew most of the answers were due to my own sin.
It also urged me to ask many people about their opinion about God and many gave the same answers that we would all go to heaven which seemed nice and easy to believe but another side of me remembered scriptures quoted to me like JOHN 3:5:
"Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God."
Two years later I coincidently met the same guy on the same street who gave me another Christian leaflet. I wanted to scurry away as I knew that becoming a Christian would change my whole life and I was scared and uncomfortable at that feeling. But at the same moment I couldn't move as I didn't want to continue living a life of emptiness. I was deeply burdened by the sin I had done. I didn't like looking at myself in the mirror, I hated how I talked and how I behaved when I was drunk. Although I was not a strong drug addict or an alcoholic I knew that I wouldn't enter into heaven if I was to die right there and then. I went to Christian meetings and was convicted by how they prayed, how they sang and the scriptures given. It was also pleasant to see secure families. Ever since I was a child, I desired to get married but seeing results of divorce within family and friends, this had become a distant dream.
God gave me faith in Him and changed my life for the positive.
I started to read a book called ‘Cross and The Switchblade' by David Wilkerson and it was uplifting to read how the Holy Spirit can lead people miraculously and how it restores lives. The Bible says in ACTS 2:38 that in order to gain eternal life, we should repent of our sins, be baptised and receive the Holy Spirit. I knew that I was a sinner and needed God's mercy and I wanted to live a life for God. I got baptised fully immersed in water and people laid hands on me and prayed for me to receive the Holy Spirit. Within a few minutes I was talking in a new language which is called speaking in tongues. This is evidence that one has received the Holy Spirit, ACTS 19:6:
"And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues and prophesied."
God gave me faith in Him and changed my life for the positive. I gained a lot of joy and peace that I had never experienced before. I also have a relationship with God and could ask Him things and it would happen. I have also prayed for my friends and family and miracles occurred which they were very thankful for. Many people saw a dramatic and positive change in me since then.
Praise the Lord! Selina
